About Telegram Services
Telegram was founded in 2013 by brothers Pavel Durov and Nikolai Durov, who previously established the Russian social networking site VKontakte (VK). The project originated as a direct response to increasing governmental surveillance and political interference in their prior venture, prompting the brothers to engineer a secure, cloud-based instant messaging protocol. Nikolai designed the proprietary MTProto encryption protocol to facilitate high-speed, encrypted data transfer across a globally distributed server architecture, while Pavel provided self-funded financial backing and executive leadership, officially launching the initial client on iOS in August 2013 followed by Android in October 2013.
The service differentiated itself from conventional mobile messengers by maintaining a cloud-synchronized architecture, allowing seamless simultaneous access across multiple mobile and desktop operating systems without requiring an active phone connection. Telegram expanded its utility beyond peer-to-peer messaging through the release of the Telegram Bot API in 2015, which enabled third-party developers to embed automated programs and web applications directly inside chat threads. Despite corporate shifts and jurisdictional relocations—ultimately establishing its operational headquarters in Dubai—the platform retained strictly private ownership under Pavel Durov, avoiding external venture control. Subsequent operational milestones included the introduction of massive broadcast Channels, end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls, the launch of Telegram Premium subscriptions, and the rollout of an integrated advertising and web-app ecosystem.
Today, Telegram functions as a hybrid instant messaging network, content syndication system, and application platform. Its architecture supports standard direct messaging, end-to-end encrypted Secret Chats, large-scale group discussions, and one-to-many broadcast channels capable of syndicating text, audio files, and unrestricted multimedia attachments. Within commercial, publishing, and institutional environments, organizations utilize public channels for real-time news dissemination, deploy programmatic text promotions via the official Telegram Ads platform, build automated conversational bots for transactional workflows, and embed interactive Mini Apps to facilitate native digital services directly within chat interfaces.
